Municipal World has announced the winners for its 2020 Awards of Distinction. Presented in six categories and voted on by Municipal World members, the awards recognize the year’s top contributors. Honourees are recognized in the categories of: Columnist, Feature Story, Municipal Video, Sponsored Content, Podcast, and Advertiser.

“Extraordinary accomplishments don’t always get the recognition they deserve,” said Municipal World CEO Susan Gardner. “It’s our privilege to share stories of municipal excellence throughout the year. So, in the December issue, we want to really celebrate some of that content.”

Columnist

George Cuff, long-time Municipal World contributor and author of the Governance Zone, was selected by readers as the top columnist. An author of nine books on local government policy governance, Cuff’s monthly column explores the relationship between municipal staff and councils while examining the challenges facing today’s local government sector.

Feature Story

Dr. Robert Long’s article, “Why so many mayor-CAO relationships fail,” was recognized as the year’s top Feature Story. The article explores how CAOs and mayors can make these relationships more functional.

Podcast

Jody Johnson, Director of Legal Services for Halton Region, received top votes for her work on the Municipal Pandemic Response podcast. She joins Municipal World CEO Susan Gardner to help unpack the latest pandemic updates for municipalities – including an episode on “COVID-19 & emergency measures for council meetings.”

Sponsored Content

Nuclear Waste Management Organization was recognized in the Sponsored Content category for their article, “Supporting communities through the global pandemic.” The article details the organization’s work to help support its community’s health and well-being with emergency funds.

Municipal Video

The City of Weyburn’s “Are you recycling right?” was selected by members as the top choice in the Municipal Video category. The video (now featured in the Municipal World Media Centre) explains some of the key rules when it comes to recycling in your blue bin.

Advertiser

Each year, Municipal World recognizes the advertiser that best uses strategy, distribution, editorial, and design. TELUS was selected as the 2020 advertiser of the year after having ran an innovative campaign that made use of both podcast and display advertising. The campaign’s focus was to draw attention to IoT and real-time visibility solutions to prepare municipalities for the future.

Local Government Excellence Spotlighted

The Municipal World 2020 Women of Influence in Local Government honourees are recognized in the issue. Also, the award recipients from a variety of Municipal World partners are spotlighted.

“We hope the awards profiled in this issue provide a glimpse into some of the important accomplishments and initiatives unfolding in the municipal sector,” Gardner said. “And some insight into the people who are making it happen.”
