The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a permanent full-time Manager, Arts and Culture in the Community Culture & Connections division.

Job description

 The Manager, Arts and Culture is a key contributor to the Community Culture & Connections division and is responsible for leading, developing, and managing the team, programs, business operations and facility needs of municipal theatres, galleries and museums. The Manager supports public art initiatives and helps foster a culture of engagement across community arts & culture organizations.

 Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Inspire and guide a team of union and non-union employees and volunteers
  • Demonstrable knowledge of theatre, museum and gallery operations to support ongoing operations
  • Lead and drive strategies to continuously improve outcomes, visibility, and efficiency across the Arts & Culture division, driving revenue and enhancing quality of service
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with other arts and culture community groups/organizations, vendors, contractors, government, service providers, production companies, private sector, and not-for-profits
  • Develop, deliver, and facilitate meetings, presentations, or public forums that will increase community engagement and help build community capacity within the arts and culture sector
  • Oversee an annual operating budget and support facility lifecycle and capital projects
  • Ensure excellent customer service across all business operations

Essential qualifications

  • College diploma or university degree (preferably in arts, arts administration, marketing or a directly related program), with six (6) to ten (10) years of related experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills, ability to work in a flexible team environment with changing priorities
  • Supervisory experience, preferably as a manager in a related arts and culture/municipal role encompassing theatre, art gallery and museum operations
  • Background in a business environment with research, analysis, report writing, budget management, human resource management, presentation and media relations skills
  • Experience overseeing arts facilities and projects with the ability to inspire the team and engage the community by offering a balanced mix of arts and culture programming, facility rentals and community partnerships
  • Experience overseeing an annual operating budget

Certifications, memberships, licenses

  • Joint Health & Safety Operations Committee training/experience an asset
  • Standard First Aid, CPR “C”, AED
  • Membership in “Ontario Presents” an asset

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works mostly indoors
  • This position works weekday, afternoon, evening and weekend hours

COVID-19 Vaccination

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

Driver’s licence/vehicle requirements

Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver’s license with a reliable motor vehicle is necessary.

Background check requirements

Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check prior to commencement of employment. A background check may include the following: education/certification verification and employment reference check. Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (Vulnerable Sector Check) prior to commencement of employment.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

  • Walking: frequent walking on level surface (lobby, greeting guests)
  • Sitting: constant sitting in a chair (computer work)
  • Hands: constant fine finger dexterity (movement), mousing (computer use)
  • Lifting: occasionally lifting supplies, marketing materials, items required for set up at shows and events


This permanent full-time position has an annual salary of $124,054 to $146,275 and will receive benefits including: participation in the OMERS pension plan (mandatory) as well as sick and vacation entitlements. Following successful completion of a 3-month waiting period, candidates will also be entitled to a comprehensive group benefits package.
