District of Saanich is a district municipality on Vancouver Island in British Columbia that exists within the Greater Victoria area. The population was 114,148 at the 2016 census which makes it the eighth-most populous municipality in the province. But more significantly, Saanich is huge. It has an area of 103.44 square kilometers (39.94 square miles) which makes it the largest municipality in Greater Victoria, and it is home to half of the University of Victoria which is bisected by the neighbouring district municipality of Oak Bay. In addition to administrating a large public utilities and infrastructure budget, the municipal government of Saanich District also maintains a long shoreline with sandy beaches located at several ocean bays. Saanich has excellent outdoor sports and recreation facilities and notable parks including, Mount Douglas Park, Mount Tolmie Park (with viewpoints), and Gyro Park.
