Lethbridge Alberta has 98,198 residents according to its 2017 municipal census. The city is near the mountains and its high elevation of 929 m (3,047.9 ft) provides Lethbridge with cooler temperatures than other urban centers in the Canadian Prairies. The city is divided by the Oldman River and the river valley has been transformed into one of North America’s largest urban park systems with sixteen square kilometers (4,000 acres) of protected land. Lethbridge City Hall at 1010 4th Avenue South is where eight city councillors and a mayor comprise the Lethbridge City Council with municipal elections every four years. In Lethbridge, the mayor and all councillors are elected at large which means they do not have regional wards. Mass transit in Lethbridge consists of forty buses operating on more than a dozen routes. The Parks and Recreation department maintains the citywide, 30-kilometre (19 mi) pedestrian/cyclist Coal Banks Trail system.
