Kitchener and Waterloo are considered “twin cities” and often referred to jointly as “Kitchener–Waterloo”. Kitchener’s urbanity covers 136.86 square kilometers and had a population of 233,222 at the time of the 2016 Census. In the last two decades, the local economy has diversified to include new high-value economic clusters. In addition to Kitchener’s internationally recognized finance and insurance and manufacturing clusters, digital media and health science clusters are emerging within the city. Downtown Kitchener experienced a building boom in 2017, with $1.2 billion in building permits issued to developers that year. The projects added over one thousand apartment units and over 1,800 condominium units. Ever since the Ion rapid transit (light rail) system, operated by Grand River Transit, was approved in 2009, the region has focused on promoting growth within the LRT corridor. The Office of the Mayor & Council for the City of Kitchener is found at 200 King Street West. City Council is comprised of one mayor and ten councilors. The members are responsible for representing their constituents when making decisions that affect local policies, programs and services while ensuring the integrity and financial wellbeing of the city.
