Burlington is a port city on Lake Ontario with 206 960 residents (2017) that’s well positioned halfway between Toronto and the Niagara Peninsula. This is the geographic center of an economic corridor known as the Golden Horseshoe. Burlington has a land area of 187 km2 (72 square miles) and a population density of 946.8 persons per square kilometre. The main urban area is south of the Parkway Belt and Hwy. 407. The City of Burlington is divided into six wards with each ward represented by a single councillor. City Council is a governing body with seven members; six councilors and the mayor are elected by the residents of Burlington for a four-year term of office through the municipal election process. Council conducts its business using the Standing Committee system. In Burlington there are four standing committees which offer policy and operational recommendations to City Council on an ongoing basis. Burlington is the hub of the Golden Horseshoe and is an active parts-and-labour supplier in Canada’s automotive and manufacturing sectors.
