The Senior Landscape Architect provides professional advice and expertise in the urban design / landscape review of development applications and undertakes or participates in special projects such as the development of streetscape, urban design and architectural control guidelines. The position also supports the activities and initiatives of other departments where expertise in landscape architecture and urban design is required. This position reports to the Manager of Policy Planning and is a wonderful opportunity for a design professional looking to work on a variety of interesting projects across multiple departments and subject areas. As the only full-time permanent design professional at the Town, the candidate has a great opportunity to work with independence and across projects. The role requires in-office presence for occasional meetings and site visits, but a great balance of work can be conducted virtually.

The ideal candidate will a post-secondary diploma/degree in Landscape Architecture from a 4-year program in an accredited College/University institution and membership in the OALA. An OALA seal, ISA Arborist certification and membership with OPPI are considered assets. The ideal candidate has a minimum of four (4) years’ experience in landscape architecture, urban design, or land use planning, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. They are familiar with Ontario’s land development process and relevant legislation, including the Planning Act, Municipal Act, Greenbelt Plan, Development Charges Act, Lake Simcoe Protection Plan, and related agency programs. Knowledge of urban design principles and guidelines for assessing complex development projects is required, as is familiarity with site plan control, subdivisions, development agreements, and related administration. Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS, and MS Office is required as is experience in developing policy planning documents and reports, with strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting to Council, Committees, and public meetings. Interpersonal and collaborative skills are required with the proven ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines under pressure, and work tactfully in political environments with diverse stakeholders, including the public, officials, agencies, and professionals.
