Project Engineer – Traffic Management and ITS
Reporting to the Project Manager, the successful candidate will perform complex engineering work related to the managing and support of traffic system data communication networks, wire/wireless technologies and video infrastructure. This position involves the planning, interpreting, designing and coordination of multiple projects and development tasks required to sustain data communications and system integration of the Region’s Advanced Traffic Management and Intelligent Transportation Systems including related business initiatives and strategies.
Focusing on system engineering, diagnostics and integrated networks related to traffic systems control, the incumbent will:
- Design, approve and be responsible for contract/project management of various capital projects by collaborating with project managers and organizing, assigning, reviewing, monitoring and approving the work of consultants and technical staff
- Assist in determining the service delivery needs for the design, integration, deployment and operations of data communication and video networks related to Intelligent Transportation Systems, traffic control systems and communication networks
- Undertake system performance, RF design, load, transmission and traffic controller / systems interoperability testing and certification
- Electrical Safety Code adherence and quality assurance for traffic communication devices
- Review consultant reports, technical system/communications documents, development submissions, preliminary and final design drawings including construction staging and documents to ensure consistency and adherence to standards, procedures, policy, by-laws, and best practices
- Plan, assess, recommend and establish short-, medium- and long-term forecast needs for design, or road safety, ITS or lighting improvements along the Region’s road network to improve public safety and operational efficiency
- Evaluate, assess, respond and represent the Region on environmental assessments, planning/design and development reports and related traffic engineering requirements for major transportation design/development/modernization projects
- Act as the Regional expert and respond to Works Committee, local and Regional Councils, internal/external stakeholders, the media and matters of litigation through the preparation of reports, presentations, witness statements and meetings
- Supervise and coordinate project staff, contractors, and consultants
The successful candidates will possess:
- Licensed as a Professional Engineer with the Professional Engineers of Ontario
- Background (education and / or experience) in Civil, transportation and / or electrical/electronic engineering
- Extensive practical experience in data communications and system architecture including integrated traffic control and management systems
- Experience in Traffic Engineering and Operations environment
- Knowledge of traffic engineering and operations principles, project management and value engineering, Accessibilities for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Highway Traffic Act, Ontario Health and Safety Act, Ontario Traffic Manuals and the Electrical Safety Code.
- Project management and leadership skills including leadership of staff, consultants, vendors and contractors
- Proficient in various computerized office and traffic engineering applications
- Proficient in the management and support of data networks, servers and switches
- Excellent analytical, problem solving, written and verbal communication skills as well as strategic planning and conceptual thinking skills
- Knowledge of traffic signal operations would be an asset.
- A valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence and access to a reliable vehicle
Note: This is a hybrid position (minimum 2 in-office work days/week) except for the initial training period during which all work days would be in-office. The hybrid work arrangement is subject to change in accordance with the Corporate Policy.
Management & Exempt Salary Grade 6
– Salary: $98,402 to $123,003 per annum
