Markham District Energy Inc. (MDEI) is a best-in-class award winning thermal energy utility providing reliable, efficient, and cost-competitive energy services to 212 commercial, residential, and institutional buildings, encompassing more than 13M sq. ft. of indoor space. Launched in 2000, MDEI owns and operates two district energy systems serving Markham’s growing development areas.

MDEI’s core business is the supply of heating and cooling energy to customers for space conditioning and processes. MDEI also produces electricity for the local power grid using combined heat and power technology. MDEI has significant growth opportunities with plans to expand its existing thermal grids, develop new systems in other growth regions within Markham, and introduce complementary technologies and fuels to the district energy platform.

The Opportunity

The Board of Directors is seeking a visionary President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead MDEI into its next era. Reporting directly to the Board, the CEO will be responsible for the organization’s strategic direction, operational execution, and financial stewardship. This role demands both bold thinking and steady leadership to ensure all operations are managed in alignment with approved budgets, corporate values, and long-term objectives.

Who You Are

As the President & CEO of one of Canada’s most forward-thinking municipal energy utilities, the ideal candidate is a visionary and financially astute leader with knowledge of sustainable energy systems, regulatory frameworks, and stakeholder engagement across municipal, provincial, and federal levels. The President & CEO has a minimum 15 years of senior leadership experience, preferably in energy, utilities, or infrastructure; experience leading construction and large capital projects; proven track record in strategic planning, infrastructure financing, and a demonstrated commitment to delivering shareholder returns while maintaining fiscal prudence and organizational solvency. The ideal candidate also has a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Environmental Science, or related field.
