The Opportunity

As Chief of Staff, you’ll elevate the effectiveness of the City Manager’s Office (CMO), advising and supporting the City Manager while fostering cohesive connections among stakeholders. Your pivotal role involves facilitating collaboration between the City Manager and Council, spearheading community and government relations efforts, and supervising office staff. You’ll navigate complex issues, support corporate priorities and initiatives, liaise with internal and external stakeholders, foster increased collaboration across city departments, and manage day-to-day operations in the CMO.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Drive strategic priorities in alignment with Hamilton’s vision, advising on key Council issues and intergovernmental projects.
  • Corporate Initiative Implementation: Lead and support the implementation of key corporate initiatives.
  • Government Relations: Manage strategic relations with governments and public agencies, providing analysis and recommendations on legislative changes.
  • Meeting and Event Coordination: Represent the City Manager at meetings and events, facilitating discussions and driving policy solutions. Coordinate meetings, forums, and special events with key stakeholders. Develop, review, and refine various communications materials such as speeches, briefing notes, and presentations.
  • Problem Solving and Issues Management: Address complex matters and urgent issues within the City Manager’s Office, ensuring confidentiality and effective resolution.
  • Communications: Oversee communication strategies, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and monitoring messaging to stakeholders. Coordinate with the Communications team for effective outreach.
  • Financial Oversight: Manage the office budget and financial reporting, keeping abreast of emerging issues that require attention.
  • Constituent Issues and Feedback: Ensure that community concerns raised to the City Manager’s Office are addressed promptly and effectively.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate possesses exemplary communication skills, and is adept at preparing reports, briefing materials, presentations, and strategic recommendations. They excel in public speaking and stakeholder engagement and demonstrate leadership in managing teams and sensitive issues. Strong organizational skills, including prioritization and multitasking, are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Business, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Extensive municipal or governmental experience, with a track record of community-based policy development.
  • Strong political acumen, ideally with experience in a political environment or government relations firm.
