Recipe for a liveable community

Preserve our built heritage

Preserving built heritage improves sustainability and the overall quality of life. Heritage neighbourhoods are more walkable, thereby reducing gasoline costs and carbon dioxide emissions.

Use the online Walk Score application to compare heritage with suburban neighbourhoods in your community. The application measures how easy it is to live a car-light lifestyle. It awards points based on the distance to amenities such as grocery stores, restaurants, shopping, parks, and hospitals. If an amenity is within 0.4 km, Walk Score assigns the maximum number of points. The number of points declines as the distance approaches 1.6 km. Total points are summed to yield a score between 0 and 100. Research has shown that the number of nearby amenities is the leading predictor of whether people walk.1
