Consider a wetland. It is doing wonderful things besides sheltering frogs, turtles, and birdwatchers.
First off, wetlands absorb carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas and contributor to climate change. This is especially true of bogs, which contain peat (partially decomposed organic matter). Secondly, wetlands provide flood and erosion control by slowing and absorbing water – a service that is becoming increasingly important as storms and flooding increase in certain parts of the country.
