Museums face growing calls to return stolen artifacts

Growing calls from communities and activists are forcing museums to reckon with their colonial legacies and find ways to present history in a more inclusive way.

Last November, Harvard University’s Peabody Museum apologized to Indigenous communities for its “complicity in the objectification of Native peoples.” The apology came after the museum acknowledged that it held hair samples taken from Indigenous children who were sent to Residential Schools in the U.S.
