Municipal referendums in Canada – Part of the pitch the Ontario government is using to back its referendum initiative is that Ontario lags behind other Canadian jurisdictions in this regard. It may well be true that most other provinces have provisions for referendums, but I have always been under the impression that the idea of a citizen-initiated, binding municipal referendum was a typically American phenomenon.
