More and more municipalities are looking at or adopting a vacancy tax as a tool to help address the housing shortage.
They vary from place to place, but in essence a vacancy tax is a tool to encourage owners of vacant housing units, whether a condo apartment or a house, to either sell that property or rent it out. The goal is to increase the supply of housing.
