First Nations land management – Beyond the Indian Act

Part 1 of this article opened with the shift in original land management that began with the evolution of Canada’s nation-state and control of traditional lands by colonial settlers. With the Indian Act of 1876, the Government of Canada had taken extensive control over every aspect of First Nation life.

Relegated to unsuitable parcels of land called “reserves,” First Nations’ culture and language were suppressed, traditional governance was replaced with settler systems,
