“It is not my crimes that will convict me,” Socrates told his fellow Athenian citizens in the court of the agora (public square) as he faced the death penalty for alleged crimes of impiety and corruption. “But instead, rumour, gossip; the fact that by whispering together you will persuade yourselves that I am guilty.”
