In 2021, a massive hydrogen sulfide gas explosion happened in the downtown core of Wheatley, Ont., a small town in the southwest corner of the municipality of Chatham-Kent on the shore of Lake Erie. The result was 20 people injured and extensive damage to several buildings, including the town’s popular watering hole, the Poke Pub.
The cause of the explosion was traced back to a migrating hydrogen sulfide gas leak from an old, undocumented well
