Location

 

This position is required to work in person at the Operations Centre located at 3330 Harvester Road. This position is also eligible for a hybrid (combination of in-person and remote) work model. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.

 

Position Overview

 

Reporting to the Manager, Urban Forestry, this position is responsible for the overall implementation of the Urban Forest Master Plan, including long-range planning of the urban forest, as well as the management and evaluation of associated outcomes and key performance indicators. This position manages geospatial tree and woodland condition assessment data including lifecycle costing, and develops policies and strategies that support urban forest planning which spans both public and private land developments.

 

Responsibilities

 

Asset Management and the Urban Forest Master Plan (UFMP) Implementation:

·         Manage, integrate, and analyze geospatial urban forest asset information from various sources, to support the implementation of Forestry related programs.

·         Support other Forestry business units through the development and tracking of KPIs to measure the performance of urban forestry programs such as tree planting and removal rates, protected trees, canopy cover changes over time, invasive species, and biodiversity improvements.

·         Utilize Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing tools to track and analyze tree canopy coverage, distribution and health and other long-term urban forest management objectives

·         Support the Manager, Urban Forestry, in the completion of annual reports detailing trends, successes and challenges as they relate to goals set out in the Urban Forest Master Plan across forestry as well as for the business units within forestry.

·         Update the Urban Forest Master Plan and Woodland Management Strategy annually and complete a State of the Urban Forest Update every five years, including a city-wide tree canopy assessment leveraging the use of remote sensing technologies

·         Research, evaluate and integrate emerging remote sensing technologies related to Urban Forest canopy assessments that inform long-range planning that are aligned with Urban Forest Master Plan goals

 

Planning & Development

·         Support other departments with the review of development applications specific to urban forestry and woodlands.

·         Develop corporate and departmental policies, procedures, details and specifications to support and streamline capital and private development project implementation

·         Review all capital projects with respect to tree removals, compensation, and tree planting requirements

 

Requirements

 

We are looking for someone with a degree in Forestry, Urban Forestry, Forest Management, Arboriculture, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture, or a related field. A master’s degree in any of these fields is considered an asset. Other requirements include ISA certified arborist designation (Urban Forest Professional designation is considered an asset) and Tree Risk Assessment (TRAQ) qualification.

 

You have five to seven years of experience in a municipal forestry setting. You are familiar with the Planning Act & Municipal Act and have proven experience in remote sensing and GIS. On occasion, you will be required to attend outdoor construction sites, walking on uneven surfaces in a dusty, noisy environment.

 

To be successful in this role, you have excellent communications skills, good attention to detail, and strong organization skills to manage multiple deadlines. You are comfortable providing advice and direction, and work well as part of a collaborative team.

 

A valid Class G driver’s license is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract (no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire). You will have access to a City vehicle but may need to use your own vehicle to travel between sites and/or City facilities.
