Location
This 24 month (2 years) temporary position is located at the Region of Durham Headquarters in Whitby, Ontario
Project Engineer – Transportation Infrastructure
Reporting to the Project Manager, this position supports the coordination and delivery of transportation planning, design and construction services for Regional structures (bridges and culverts) in a manner that achieves a safe and efficient Regional Road system that balances mobility requirements with the needs of the Regional community. The Project Engineer (Structures) will be responsible for supporting the management, delivery and rehabilitation of the Region’s structures.
The Project Engineer’s duties will include:
• Providing project management support by guiding, directing and coordinating the design and construction of various structures (bridges and culverts)
• Assisting with identifying repair and rehabilitation strategies, prioritization and budgeting of the Region’s structures inventory
• Undertaking inspections and monitoring of the Region’s structures inventory using the Ontario Structure Inspection Manual; and
• Conducting site inspections and participate in site meetings during design and construction
The incumbent will:
• Support, coordinate and complete the technical review and commenting of structure related project and improvement submissions, and operational activities which have an impact on the Region’s structures.
• Assist with the initiation, preparation and delivery of structural rehabilitation and replacement projects, plans and proposals
• Contribute to identifying and securing funding for Regional structure improvements and programs to ensure proposals, projects and programs are financially feasible by identifying and addressing financial implications,
and monitoring, reviewing, and recommending fee structures for services
• Develop, implement and follow work plans for budget considerations, by examining structure rehabilitation or replacement alternatives, and proposing and providing recommendations
• Mentor, collaborate and guide Regional staff to ensure the most effective and cost-efficient use of staff resources
• Assist with providing technical leadership and direction to staff and clients
• Support and promote staff responsibility by training and coaching staff
• Facilitate the Division’s role in coordinating structure related matters involving multiple divisions, departments and external agencies by providing input into the scope and vision for inter-department and inter-agency projects
• Represent the Regional Corporation to satisfy legislated requirements and expectations
• Work in accordance with the provisions of applicable health and safety legislation and all corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to occupational health and safety
The successful applicant will possess:
• Post secondary education in Civil Engineering.
• License as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) or an equivalent PEO Limited License (LL) in an appropriate field/discipline
• Extensive relevant experience in a design, operations, and construction environment for structures (bridges and culverts)
• Knowledge of structural engineering and experience with various design principles, guidelines and standards including Ontario Structure Inspection Manual (OSIM)
• Knowledge and experience with on-site field inspections and construction practices
• Familiarity of how and when to apply knowledge and use engineering judgement for structural projects.
• The ability to coach, mentor and provide guidance to staff
• Experience working with MS Office applications
• Excellent verbal and written communication, project management, problem solving, and time management skills
• A valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence and access to a reliable vehicle
• Experience working with AutoCAD and/or HEC-RAS is considered an asset.
Management & Exempt Salary Grade 5
– Salary: $95,818 to $119,773 per annum
