The Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability Department is comprised of three Branches: Solid Waste Operations, Solid Waste Management Policy and Planning, and Environmental Risk Management and Compliance. Overall, this Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City’s Landfill site, which includes non-hazardous solid waste disposal, household hazardous waste receiving and disposal, leaf and yard waste disposal and composting, and solid waste collection and disposal. The Environmental Risk Management and Compliance Branch aims to minimize environmental risk associated with growth and corporate infrastructure, including Source Water Protection, Climate change strategy, Sustainable Development Strategy, Contaminated site response, sewer use by-law, spill response, ground water and surface water monitoring and investigations, and site plan reviews. This Department also develops and maintains strategies that promote circular economy and environmental sustainability, including waste diversion programs, sustainable waste management strategy, public outreach, and education.
Under the general guidance and direction of the Supervisor of Waste Disposal, the Landfill Systems Technologist is responsible for supporting the development, coordination, monitoring, analysis, evaluation, and modification of landfill projects, programs, plans, services, and operations. Additionally, this position provides project management and contract administration for same. Monitors and tracks operating performance to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, standards, policies, procedures, and by-laws. Overall, this position plays an integral role in effectively supporting operations and compliance of the landfill to enable the City of Barrie to minimize its ecological footprint, promote environmental sustainability, and provide members of the community with cost-effective municipal services.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- Three (3) year College Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Engineering Technology, or related discipline
- Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) Designation from the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)

Experience
- Three (3) years of experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities in a regulated operations work environment, including:
- one (1) year of experience assisting with or developing, coordinating, and administering landfill systems and operational plans and programs

- Availability, as required, to assist with after-hours questions, concerns, or emergencies; to attend evening/weekend meetings or special events; or to work outside of designated normal hours per week
Conditions of Employment
- Full membership in the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check

Location: Environmental Center, 272 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie, Ontario
Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2025 pay range:
- Pay Level: Level 7
- Yearly Salary: $78,915.20 to $94,577.60
- Hourly Pay Rate: $37.94 to $45.47
