Reporting to the Manager of Park Services, the Supervisor of Turf, Golf & Sportsfields Operations is responsible for ensuring effective delivery of grass cutting services and turf maintenance activities within City parks and on roadsides as well as the care and maintenance of the city owned golf course and of high quality sports field facilities throughout the City of Brantford.
Brantford is host to dozens of major sports tournaments annually as well as hundreds of field bookings each month at more than seventy facilities, requiring service prior to and during rentals that take place seven days a week, including evenings and weekends April through November. This position will also act as the Municipal Weed Inspector, develop and maintain turfgrass cultural programs, perform system and facility inspections, ensure high quality facility standards and expectations and undertake repairs as necessary. The Supervisor also oversees winter maintenance activities relating to winter control of park properties and associated areas, pruning, mulching, and support/coordination of the neighbourhood ice rink program. Although shift work is not anticipated it is a possibility in the winter months as a result of potential shared duties with the Public Works Department.
This position must be available to be on call to provide response to Parks Services inquiries on a rotating schedule. Hours of work are 35 hours/week; at times work hours may include afternoons and weekends as well as occasional unscheduled hours for overtime, as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Three (3) year minimum post-secondary degree in Turf Management, Sports Facility Management,
agronomy, plant science or related program of study; or combined equivalent post-secondary diplomas in
artificial and natural turf systems, landscape, sports or related professional certification - Minimum of five (5) years’ of progressive work experience in related field; turf management, parks
maintenance / landscape operations - Minimum of three (3) years’ of proven leadership experience, supervising a substantial number of staff or
leading large work teams, preferably in a unionized, municipal environment - Current Pesticide Applicators License(s). Exterminator License – Land Category Landscape, Land
Category Industrial Vegetation. Candidates missing one or more licenses may be considered, but will be
required to obtain all licenses within 6 months of successful recruitment - Advanced knowledge of agronomy and environmental turfgrass cultural practices (natural and synthetic
turf) including pests, disease, weed management, integrated pest management and the application of
pesticides; IPM Certification is required - Knowledge of sports field construction principles, practices and methods including an understanding of
soils, drainage, grading and irrigation systems - Demonstrated experience in grooming and repair of sports surfaces such as baseball/softball infields,
soccer and football fields (natural and synthetic turf) - Understanding of various sports organization requirements for field layout and marking
- Extensive experience in the operation of and general maintenance of common and specialized turf and
grooming equipment - Demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and safe work practices
- Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient computer skills, including good working knowledge and application of MS Word, Excel and
Outlook; aptitude to utilize digital technology - Ability to manage multiple and changing demands and priorities and implement a continuous learning
approach - Possess a valid Class G driver s license in good standing during the course of employment
- IMS 200 Certification or equivalent (ICS200) is considered an asset. Subject to course availability,
certification must be achieved within the first year of employment.
WAGE/SALARY RANGE: $46.44 to $58.05 per hour (based on a 35 hour work week) plus benefits
