Organization Name: Regional District of Nanaimo

Location: Nanaimo

Local Government Awareness Week (LGAW) is an annual initiative to build public awareness of local government roles and encourage participation in local government processes. In recognition of the week which runs until May 22, the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) invites residents to learn about who and what the RDN is, the services we provide and how you can get more involved.

“LGAW is an opportunity for residents to learn more about the wide range of services delivered by the RDN and how local governance relates to their daily lives – from recreation programs and transit service to solid waste collection and building permits,” said Tyler Brown, RDN Chair. “It is also a chance to remind residents that they can provide feedback on a vast array of RDN projects that matter the most to them through the RDN’s Get Involved online platform.”

Throughout the week, we will be sharing information about the RDN through social media channels and on our Get Involved page at getinvolved.rdn.ca/who-we-are. On the Who We Are page, there are FAQs, videos, and an online form to submit any questions you may have about the RDN. Plus, anyone who is signed up on Get Involved by May 31 has a chance to win one of four prizes! The winner has a choice of a $100 RDN Recreation and Parks gift certificate, an RDN Transit pass valued at $130, a $100 credit on their next RDN utility bill or a $100 gift certificate for a local restaurant or business.

LGAW also features Asset Management Awareness Day on May 19 to highlight the importance of sound asset management practices. The RDN’s assets total over $500 million in value and include a wide range of items, from utility trucks and computers to fire halls, arenas and playgrounds. The RDN’s Corporate Asset Management Program manages and continuously improves organization-wide practices to sustain these community infrastructure systems for generations to come.
