Columns are a little like niches. They come to reflect the interests, idiosyncrasies, and ideals of the people who write them. Columns also tend to get named after niches: some columns occupy corners, while others are zones; there are also columns to be found in rooms, nooks, and even the odd cubbyhole.

All of those names can sound cozy and familiar. They also provide context, meaning, and alignment for everything that appears under their banner.
