Municipal ombudsman in Ontario: moving the fairness agenda forward
In December 2006, the Ontario Legislature enacted the Municipal Statute Law Amendment Act. Among other things, the statute amended the Municipal Act, 2001 by adding accountability sections, including a section allowing municipalities to introduce ombudsman plans into their civic administrations. Municipal corporations often see themselves as the fairest and most democratic of governments in Canada and may not readily see the need for such an instrument.
