Four decades after Lorrie Otto began to fight for “natural” gardens, there is still a culture clash. One of the best documented is Jason and Lisa Spangler’s epic fight between native plants, xeriscaping and the Springwoods Municipal Utility District.

The Spanglers thought it was outrageous to grow water-guzzling non-native grass. They turned their lawn into an impressive garden of drought-tolerant native plants.1 It became a certified National Wildlife Federation Backyard Wildlife Habitat and Texas Parks
