For over 30 years, the Ship-source Oil Pollution Fund has been compensating victims of oil pollution caused by ships. Simply put, we receive and assess claims for pollution damage caused by any type of oil spilled by any type of ship or boat anywhere in Canadian waters.
This federal Fund managed by an independent Administrator, has compensated victims of small and medium pollution incidents that occur regularly in Canadian waters. We would also be able to compensate victims in the event of an oil spill disaster.
The polluter-pays principle being key to our compensation regime has allowed us to take all reasonable steps to recover costs from polluters.
