New Brunswick’s government has just launched a process to overhaul the province’s local government system. It’s long past due: the province’s last major municipal reorganization occurred almost 50 years ago. New Brunswick’s communities have undergone changes at all levels – adapting to transformations in society, the economy, and technology – but they are still saddled with decision-making and fiscal tools from the 1960s. Over 20 studies have pointed out deficiencies in the system.
