Municipal World celebrates landmark anniversary

National magazine devoted to local government now in its 115th year

ST. THOMAS — February 10, 2006 — Municipal World Inc. announced the 115th anniversary of its flagship magazine – Municipal World – to be celebrated throughout 2006. Devoted to promoting effective municipal government across Canada, the magazine is read by municipal leaders – both elected and appointed – across the nation.

Established in 1891 under the banner of Municipal Miscellany, the magazine expanded its scope and signalled that change the following year under the name The Municipal World. Today, Municipal World continues to serve as the oldest, continuously published monthly municipal magazine in the world.

The magazine covers municipal management techniques and strategies; environmental issues; impacts of new legislation, policy and case law; municipal authority, duty and liability; and details about how forward-thinking municipalities are using new technology and tools to streamline operations and improve service.

“In particular, issues around governance and service to the community continue to be as core to the discussion in our pages today as they were in 1891,” says Executive Editor Susan Gardner. “Likewise, the identification of emerging trends and issues affecting local government remains a central component of our monthly content message.”

Regular Municipal World columnists include municipal management consultant George B. Cuff; change management expert Peter deJager; environmental lawyer Dianne Saxe; and procurement lawyer Denis Chamberland. Joining the regular line-up in February is technology specialist Ron Budreau. Contributed articles from experts in the field and case studies drawn from real municipal experience are a regular focus in the magazine.

As the magazine celebrates its anniversary, Municipal World Inc. President Nicholas Smither will be travelling across Canada, attending numerous municipal and industry conferences. Among the events he plans to attend are the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association Annual Convention; Ontario Good Roads Association / Rural Ontario Municipal Association Annual Conference; Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities Annual Convention; GLOBE 2006 Biennial Trade Fair & Conference on Business and the Environment; Ontario Small Urban Municipalities Annual Conference; Federation of Canadian Municipalities Annual Conference; Association of Municipalities of Ontario Annual Conference; the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association Annual Convention; and the Association of Manitoba Municipalities Annual Convention.

“These events present a unique opportunity for us to connect with our clients – readers and advertisers alike,” says Gardner. “This closeness to the people we serve has been one of the keys to our success over the past 115 years.”
