Municipal Engagement Program Team
The NWMO is seeking to build an experienced management team that will lead the organization’s municipal engagement program. The NWMO offers an exciting team environment in a growing organization for those interested in the opportunity to design and deliver engagement programs and work collaboratively with community-based and municipal organizations.
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (“NWMO”) is committed to working collaboratively with Canadians to develop and implement a management approach for the long-term care of Canada’s used nuclear fuel that is socially acceptable, technically sound, environmentally responsible and economically feasible. The NWMO is responsible for implementing a plan of Adaptive Phased Management, the plan selected by government to ensure the safe, secure long-term containment and isolation of the used nuclear fuel that we produce, with the flexibility for future generations to act in their own best interests.
In implementing Adaptive Phased Management, NWMO will draw on the best technical expertise in Canada and internationally, and benefit from the knowledge of specialists and the perspectives of citizens to address the social, ethical and technical challenges. The successful long-term management of nuclear fuel waste is dependent on NWMO’s commitment to moving forward together and collaboratively with Canadians, engaging citizens and involving them in setting future direction. Engagement with community-based and municipal organizations represents a key component of NWMO’s collaborative design and implementation of the plan.
Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities will include leading the development and overseeing the implementation of short and long-term relationship and engagement programs in Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, including:
- Building relationships, raising awareness and expanding engagement opportunities with municipal and community organizations, local governments and councils, advisory committees and business associations;
- Overseeing the management of collaborative projects and research initiated with community partners;
- Delivering briefings and information sessions;
- Developing and delivering formal presentations and representing NWMO at a wide variety of community-based events;
- Building, coaching and managing a small team of professionals; and
- Overseeing the refinement and implementation of specific programs, including a youth engagement program.
The ideal candidate will bring a combination of:
- Ability to strategically design and recommend community engagement approaches;
- Demonstrated, successful experience with building relationship management/engagement and community outreach programs of a relevant scope and scale;
- Experience with management of municipal government/community relations and outreach/engagement programs;
- Communication and public presentation skills which give evidence of the ability to relate to wide and diverse community audiences;
- Strategic program planning abilities;
- Strong interpersonal and influencing skills;
- Demonstrated relationship-management experience of a similar scope;
- Based in Toronto, with willingness and ability to travel regularly (Ontario, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Quebec);
- Social Science or humanities degree/relevant academic qualifications an asset; and
- Bilingualism (English/French) an asset.
